With this grant, we aim to promote global collaboration by sharing knowledge and experience and to provide our resources to empower registries and donor centers around the world to further advance their work.
Inspired by the 25th anniversary of the World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA), we awarded the annual promotional grant for worldwide collaboration for the first time in 2019. The goal is to intensify the cooperation with international registries and stem cell donor centers so that even more patients worldwide can find their matching hematopoietic stem cell donor.
Every donor center or registry can apply – no matter where they are active. One of the requirements is that the donor center or registry must be a non-profit organization.
The DKMS Global Collaboration Grant is worth approximately €150,000 and is awarded over a one-year period. The grant is funded and administered by DKMS.
The application period for the grant starts on June 1. Applicants from all countries are invited to submit their applications until September 30.
Please submit your application to grants@dkms.de via email.
The responsible body for the registry and donor center must be a non-profit corporate body or a legal entity of public law.
The grant includes:

Applications will be evaluated on the potential impact that the funding and support could have on donor- and patient-related activities and outcomes. All documents will be treated confidentially. The grantee will be announced every year on October 31.
CBMDP – Save a Life, Greece
"The DKMS Global Collaboration Grant was a valuable experience and real chance for CBMDP – Save a Life. It was an incentive for critical self-reflection on issues such as the Center’s communication policy, the information provided to the public and the awareness of the public in Greece regarding bone marrow donation. This led to the implementation of several quality actions with a very effective impact on public opinion, increasing the public reach of the Center’s message. These actions are now "good practice" and a basis for further planning especially with regards to the recruitment of volunteer donors. At the same time, the experience and insights gained in the training sessions with DKMS have been actively used to newly adopt or develop own practices and activities in the areas of public relations and operations management," says Dimitris Sioutis, CBMDP – Save a Life.
South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR)
“We at the SABMR would like to express our appreciation to DKMS for the support and sharing of ideas that continued even during COVID-19. Receiving the grant was indeed an honor and went a long way to opening new doors and building further confidence in our staff and making them reach out to new ideas and plans to grow the registry,” says Jane Ward, SABMR – South African Bone Marrow Registry.
Ukrainian Bone Marrow Donor Registry
“The Global Collaboration Grant will help us to better understand how a donor register should work and we can use this knowledge to build our register in Ukraine. And, of course, support for donor registration is extremely important to us. Ukraine has only started the first bone marrow transplantation from unrelated donors this year; we have a lot of work behind us and much more ahead of us. The Ukrainian Bone Marrow Donor Registry was established in 2018 and is still only one registry in Ukraine. From the beginning, DKMS and WMDA have supported us in many ways. And we are very pleased that this year our efforts to establish the registry and transplantation in Ukraine have been recognized and we have received the grant. This gives us the confidence that we are on the right track. The Global Collaboration Grant from DKMS is certainly a very important support for the development of our registry and the transplantation of stem cells in Ukraine. It will save many lives! Many thanks from the Ukraine!” says Roman Kuts, Ukrainian Bone Marrow Donor Registry.
Karelian Registry of unrelated hematopoietic stem cell donors
“We are looking forward to substantially boosting our recruiting and donation rates during the next three years, with the aim to double the number of enlisted donors typed by 6 loci at high resolution. Also, we are eager to learn and adopt the most efficient practices of donor recruiting and CT/donation request processing, which are currently employed and developed at DKMS, as well as at other registries worldwide, with the ultimate goal to provide best matches for the patients, at the same time minimizing the risks for the generous donors of marrow and PBSC,” says Yuri Ioffe, Karelian Registry of unrelated hematopoietic stem cell donors.
